2024 Amelia Island Concours

Mar 25, 2024

I had the fortune of attending the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and I must say it did not disappoint, except for one minor/major flaw: there were no BMWs at the show other than an E30 M3 and E28 M5.  I previously attended this show in 2022 and let me tell you, BMW was properly represented. At the top of the list was the V12 LMR. Other than that, this year’s show was excellent.

Beautiful cars lined the golf course. Pre-A 356 Porches, 911s, Rufs, Jaguar E-Types & D-Types, and a few Mercedes 300SL Gullwings, one of which was outlawed to perfection, a car that I have to say I spent way too much time with.  The British were properly represented as well with MGs & Austin Healys scattered around the show one of which had the absolute greatest hood ornament placed on a British roadster, ever; a rabbit with a broken limb standing on top of turtle!  In the motorsports arena, Michelle Mouton’s Audi Rally Car stole the spot-light, and rightfully so.  Beautiful older Ferrari race cars were also on display. And as always, there was an abundance of supercars, most notably, a pair of Ferrari F50s, a Countach, a Bugatti and the usual cars that follow.

But for me, this show had something that I had never experienced and can only hope to someday experience again.  A downpour, mid-show turned this Concours into a borderline private car show, all for me. People initially ran for cover, but eventually ended up leaving the show never to come back.  Cars that had seen wax more often applied to them then they were driven were finally seeing rain, some for the very first time.  Beautiful beads of water running down the hoods of car owners brave enough to not cover their cars in the environment. And as for the pair of Ferrari F50s, the owner had brought two car covers, both of which were used in all the wrong ways on the convertible F50, thereby making for quite a humorous picture.

As for me, in August, I will be attending the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Car Week in California and if you’ll allow it, I would love to share my trip with you, the past 2 events had a ton of great BMWs, hoping for the same in 2024. Cheers!
