2024 Autobahn Country Club HPDE and Car Show

May 26, 2024

HPDE  On the third weekend in May Windy City BMW headed to Joliet for it’s now annual spring Autobahn Country Club high performance driving event put on with the help of our returning sponsors BMW of Schererville and Clearwater Capital Partners and a new sponsor for this year Euroquipe.

The weather gods were smiling all weekend with not even a hint of precipitation and our drivers did their part logging a ton of laps on the challenging South Track with one minor fender bender as the only incident.
We had 29 on track instructor coaches and 3 classroom instructors available to help the 22 Intermediate and 21 Novice group drivers start or continue their journey into the addictive world of high performance driving. Meanwhile 15 Experienced solo drivers honed their skills during 8 to 16 hours of open track time.

On Saturday Kyle Ashpole shepherded four dozen well shined and obviously loved Bimmers to a car show on the lawn, an always popular event and a chance for more folks to see what we actually do out on the road course.
This year we were able to keep costs stable, despite increased track costs, largely thanks to our sponsors, so check them out: BMW of Schererville, Clearwater Capital Partners and Euroquipe

And finally a shout out to our committee members, Jim Waldman our Chief Instructor for matching, rematching and rematching again our drivers to their coaches, John Roeslmeier our money man and swag procurer, Tom Schulty our invaluable IT man and Registrar, Dave Farnsworth Chief Steward for vetting those drivers new to us and of course the man without which the rest of us would quit, Randy Everson Chief Worrier and one man Quality Assurance Department. And last but certainly not least, thanks to Worker Staff Bev Everson for preparing & distributing all the necessary registration materials and to Bryan Tippens for manning the track-out safety check spot all day long on Saturday.

If you were there, thanks and we hope to see you next year, if you weren’t it’s not too early to start planning for 2025—life is too short to never drive a track.  HPDE Committee

May 18th brought us Bimmers & Burgers in conjunction with our Autobahn Country Club HPDE in Joliet, and it was a big success again with beautiful, sunny weather and a great turnout just shy of 50 cars. Everyone who attended seemed to have a good time looking at nice cars, watching race cars, and talking with other members. Autobahn Café has pretty good food for a “snack shack”, adding the burgers to this Bimmers & Burgers. I and other members were also treated to a track touring session, where we took our own cars out on track, limited to 50 mph, for about 30 minutes. Also, move over Savage Geese, because Ryan Yaggie, local celebrity of WGN Morning News fame, was spotted in the Autobahn paddock that weekend!

Thanks to Autobahn Country Club and the Windy City BMW HPDE committee for planning another great weekend! This is far from the last car meet we have planned this year, so see you at the next one at Rookies in Saint Charles on June 15th!
